Guide to Powerboat and RIB Training
Hands-on powerboat training
Driving and handling any RIB or powerboat needs good technique and awareness of safety afloat. We strongly advise that everyone who is new to powerboating and RIB driving takes a specialist powerboat training course. The courses are also suitable if you are out of practice, or have experience of other boats, but are relatively new to rib driving.
Attending a training course at an RYA Recognised Training Centre, is the best way to get more from your RIB. You’ll have a better understanding of its capabilities, power and safe handling. Plus, you will be able to drive other boats, such as club safety boats.
RYA Powerboat Level 1 – Introduction to Powerboating
This is a basic powerboating course for the novice or for young people. A one day course, PB Level 1 acts as a confidence boosting introduction to boating and going to sea.
RYA Powerboat Handling – Level 2
Most people opt straight for PB Level 2. This comprehensive course over two days covers slow and close quarters driving and high-speed boat handling. Man overboard recovery, the basics of local navigation, charts, tides and the essential collisioin regulation – the highway code for boating.
Powerboat Level 2 will give the majority of people all the skills and techniques required to help you enjoy daytime boating. PB2 also provides the basis for the ICC, the International Certificate of Competence, which you will need if taking your boat overseas.
RYA Intermediate Powerboat
Building on the knowledge from Level 2, this two day course will extend your knowledge of navigation so you can undertake voyages further afield. You will learn using both traditional techniques and electronic devices for planning and navigating on coastal waters with safety and confidence.
This course is particularly suitable if you are moving up to larger or more powerful RIBS or powerboats. It will cover more advanced boat handling and cruising at planning speed.
RYA Advanced Powerboat
Held over two days and one night, this is the course for leisure and professional boaters, undertaking long distance trips at night. You will come away with more advanced boat handling, seamanship, pilotage, navigation to ensure your safety and confidence by day and night.
The syllabus is designed around the needs of commercial power boaters and includes a night passage exercise and practical heavy weather handling where possible.
